The airport provides a gateway to the famous oasis city of Al Ain, which occupies an important place in the history of the UAE. The city, the second largest in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, has a history dating back to the 4th millennium BC, but it was the late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the UAE, who transformed it into the green oasis it is today. Al Ain is home to the UAE University, the country's largest museum and zoo, as well as several parks, and archaeological sites. It is also one of the UAE's leading agricultural centres. Located about 160 km east of Abu Dhabi and the same distance south-east of Dubai, Al Ain's scenic beauty, entertainment park and museum are key attractions to local and international holiday-makers being only an hour and a half hour drive from either city. More recently, the city has been central to the promotion and development of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as an attractive tourist destination; Al Ain International Airport has been key to this having brought a series of air shows Abu Dhabi’s second city which enjoy a huge following from the around the UAE and internationally.
