In operation since 1982, Abu Dhabi International Airport is the capital’s main airport and the flagship of ADAC’s five airports it operates. - Abu Dhabi International Airport celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2012
- The airport has been voted the passenger’s favorite airport in the Middle East
- It is the first 4-star airport in the Middle East
- The second runway is 4.1km long and is CAT IIIB classified
- The airport handles over 12 million passengers annually
The capital city’s airport consists of three terminals with a joint handling capacity of around 12.5 million passengers annually. However, with the completion of the iconic Midfield Terminal Complex (MTC) currently under development, the airport’s capacity will eventually handle 47 million passengers annually.
When ADAC was officially appointed by the Government of Abu Dhabi to take responsibility of the Emirates’ five airports, major expansion plans were drawn up to develop the facilities and services of Abu Dhabi International Airport. ADAC has worked continuously since its inception to enhance the airport and thus the passenger experience. After the opening of Terminal 2 in 2005, ADAC opened a second runway in 2008 which received regulatory approval for enhanced low visibility operations from the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the first of its kind in the Middle East. In 2009, the state-of-the-art Terminal 3 was commissioned as the home of Etihad Airways and is currently home to some of the world’s most luxurious duty-free boutiques. 2011 witnessed the opening of the airport’s brand new and symbolic 109m tall Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower and later in the year Terminal 1 fully re-opened after a complete refurbishment, bringing the 30-year old airport in line with the modernity of Terminal1.
The airport provides a wide range of services to passengers that ensure efficient ground operations and satisfaction, 109 check-in desks, 21 gates, 8 baggage claim belts, 4000 parking spaces for short and long term parking, along with a state-of-the-art duty-free area, lounges and hotel.
It is this continuous improvement of our flagship airport and ADAC’s commitment to delivering excellence and top quality service that has seen the airport frequently awarded. In 2010 Abu Dhabi International Airport was crowned the ‘Best Improved Airport in the World’* and in April 2012 was awarded by the passenger as the ‘Best Airport in the Middle East’*. These prestigious accolades are the result of the Skytrax independent airport passenger satisfaction survey, run across 388 airports globally. Also in 2012, the airport was voted the third best airport in the world within its 20 million passenger category and furthermore, certified as the first 4-star airport in the Middle East, a reflection of the ongoing improvement in the Capital’s Airport facilities and service standards.
Currently, more than 53 airlines operate from Abu Dhabi International Airport, serving more than 85 destinations in 49 different countries across the globe.
